New Paddlers

Thinking of giving the exciting sport of

dragon boating a go?

Come and try for free with our team!

If you are interested in trying dragon boating, please contact us to learn more about our free training sessions and when the best time is to join us on the water. You will receive qualified coaching, insurance cover and the use of paddling equipment. By trialling the sport, you can see if dragon boating is for you before committing financially. Warning it can be addictive.

A Griffins member will set you up with the gear you need and introduce you to the team. After a warm-up and some basic instructions you will be seated with an experienced paddler so you can watch and learn as you paddle. Most importantly feel free to ask questions, relax and have some fun. You don't have to paddle the entire session if you get tired or if you just want to observe the other paddlers.

You can try this exciting sport on a winter DragonPass and paddle for free for the whole of winter. When you are ready, go to our Membership page to sign up.

What you will need

Dragon Boat ACT supplies paddles as well as a life jacket if you are not a confident swimmer (or you choose to try out in the cooler months). You will join the boat with the rest of the Griffins team, including a qualified sweep (to steer the boat) and a coach.
You need to:
  •  bring a water bottle, sunscreen, hat / sunglasses.
  •  wear something comfortable (e.g. gym gear) that you don’t mind getting wet and that you could swim in if there was an emergency.  For the colder months, thermals, a beanie and some waterproof or warming socks and gloves are recommended.
  •  wear closed shoes that can get wet – (no thongs and no bare feet allowed)

Training times

Tuesday and Thursday - 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm (warmer months only)
Sunday - 9:15 am to 10:30 am
This includes a 15 minute warm up, and an hour paddle on the lake. A good stretch (and of course a good catch-up) after paddling is also encouraged.
While we paddle all year round, in the cooler months we usually only paddle on Sunday morning.

Training location

Grevillea Park, Menindee Drive, Barton (off Morshead Drive)
